Runways at DFW Airport: design and operations

DFW operates 7 runways with a dominant north–south layout and two diagonal runways (13/31). DFW has 4 runways that reach 13,400 ft in length, allowing heavy widebody aircraft to operate comfortably at maximum takeoff weight.

The combination of north–south parallels and diagonals allows the airport to adapt to prevailing winds, maintain parallel arrivals and departures, and switch configurations without breaking the flow when conditions change. This enables DFW to sustain very high operational rates throughout most of the day.

DFW’s longest runway and operating performance

DFW has 4 runways that reach 13,400 ft, which allows it to handle long-haul aircraft such as the Boeing 777, 787, 747-8 and Airbus A380 under Texas heat, rain or maximum-weight conditions without compromising safety margins or separation.

This extra length supports ultra-long-haul departures, heavy cargo operations and flexibility when maintenance affects one of the critical runways.

Passenger terminals at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport: complete guide

DFW currently operates 5 passenger terminals: A, B, C, D and E, with more than 170 gates in total.

All terminals are connected within the secure area by Skylink, a free automated train that runs 24/7 and links all five terminals with travel times of only a few minutes.

Additionally, Terminal F is under development and will add up to 31 gates operated by American Airlines in phases beginning in 2027, with direct connection to Terminal D and a future Skylink station.

Role of each terminal at DFW (A, B, C, D, E and F)

Terminal A

Primary base for American Airlines for domestic flights and select international services. Connected airside with Terminals B and C, it enables fast connections across AA’s network.

Terminal B

Dedicated in practice to American Airlines (including regional operations). Functions as the “north side” of AA’s super-hub, with direct access to A and D and a high volume of domestic connections.

Terminal C

Another American Airlines exclusive terminal for domestic operations, essential for feeding the connection banks and redistributing traffic when other terminals undergo adjustments or construction.

Terminal D

The main international terminal, serving American Airlines and several foreign carriers such as British Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, JAL, and Korean Air. It is the center of long-haul operations and features high-standard hotels and lounges.

Terminal E

A multi-airline terminal for domestic and some international flights, where Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier, Alaska and others operate. It is the primary “non-AA” area and will free capacity for other airlines as some American Airlines operations shift to F.

Terminal F (under development)

Planned as a major expansion for American Airlines, with 31 gates and its own check-in, security, baggage claim and parking facilities, aimed at moving the AA hub at DFW toward the 100-million-passenger mark by the end of the decade.

Destinations and connectivity at DFW Airport

DFW offers service to 269 destinations: 196 domestic and 73 international, making it one of the most extensive hub networks in the country.

The most in-demand routes include domestic destinations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Chicago-O’Hare and Denver, and strong international routes to Cancun, London-Heathrow and Mexico City, according to 2024 statistics.

For frequent travelers, this translates into something simple: if you fly, work or connect in the U.S., DFW shows up in your itinerary again and again.
