What is the Puerto Rico Airport (SJU) like?

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), located in Isla Verde (in the municipality of Carolina, northeast of the San Juan metropolitan area) is the most important airport in Puerto Rico and the busiest in the Caribbean.

Since its opening in 1955, SJU has served as the main air gateway to the island, connecting Puerto Rico with numerous cities in the United States, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Europe.

In 2024, the airport handled more than 13.2 million passengers, which consolidates it as the airport with the highest traffic on the island.

SJU combines suitable runway infrastructure, broad connectivity, multiple terminals, and air traffic that has shown recovery and sustained growth in recent years.

Runways and air operations at SJU Airport

The main runway, 08/26, measures 10,400 feet and is one of the most important in the Caribbean. This runway recently underwent major renovation, with an investment of approximately US$48 million. It was its first full structural intervention since the late 1990s. After the work was completed, the runway reopened for normal operations.

The second runway, 10/28, complements the operation by allowing traffic separation.

Thanks to the design and length of its runways, SJU can receive medium and wide-body aircraft, supporting domestic, regional, international, cargo, and private aviation operations. The operational infrastructure consistently keeps SJU among the Caribbean airports with the highest capacity.
